In short

What does the Double Discount Calculator do?

A double discount is two discounts applied one after the other, such as 20% off and then a further 10% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total discount is smaller than the two percentages added together. This calculator shows the final price, the real total discount and, if you enter your product cost, your profit and margin.

What each input means

Original price
before discounts
First discount
% off
Second discount
% off the reduced price
Product cost (optional)
for margin and limits

2. How is the double discount calculator calculated?

  • Price after first discount = price × (1 − first discount %)
  • Final price = price after first discount × (1 − second discount %)
  • Total discount % = 1 − (1 − first %) × (1 − second %)
  • Profit = final price − product cost
  • Highest second discount before a loss = 1 − cost ÷ price after first discount
Example

A $120 product with 20% off then a further 10% off drops to $96.00 and then $86.40. The real total discount is 28%, not 30%, and the customer saves $33.60. With a $50 product cost, profit is $36.40 (a 42.1% margin) and the second discount could go as high as 47.9% before you sell at a loss.

3. Who should use this tool?

  • Store owners running a sale with a sitewide discount plus a discount code.
  • Anyone who wants to know the real price after stacked promotions.
  • Owners who need to check a discount will not push a product below cost.
FAQ

Double Discount Calculator: frequently asked questions

Are two 10% discounts the same as 20% off?

No. Two 10% discounts applied one after the other take 19% off, because the second applies to the reduced price.

Does the order of the discounts matter?

Not for the final price. Applying 20% then 10% gives the same result as 10% then 20%.

How do I stop stacked discounts from losing money?

Enter your product cost and check the profit. The calculator also shows the highest second discount you can offer before selling at a loss.

Can Shopify stack discounts?

Shopify has rules about which discounts can combine. Check the combination settings on each discount in your admin.
