In short

What does the Break-Even Orders Calculator do?

Your break-even point is the number of orders a month at which your store covers all its fixed costs, such as your Shopify plan, apps, tools and salaries. Divide those costs by the profit each order makes before fixed costs, and you get the orders you need. This calculator also shows the orders and revenue needed to reach a profit goal.

1. How to use this break-even orders calculator?

  1. 1Add up your monthly fixed costs: plan, apps, tools, contractors and salaries.
  2. 2Enter the profit each order makes before those fixed costs. The Profit Margin Calculator gives you this number.
  3. 3Read the orders and revenue needed to break even, and to reach your profit goal.

What each input means

Monthly fixed costs
plan, apps, tools, team
Profit per order before fixed costs
after product, shipping, fees and ads
Average order value
per order
Monthly profit goal
after fixed costs

2. How is the break-even orders calculator calculated?

  • Break-even orders = fixed costs ÷ profit per order
  • Orders per day = break-even orders ÷ 30
  • Break-even revenue = break-even orders × average order value
  • Orders for goal = (fixed costs + profit goal) ÷ profit per order
Example

With $500 of fixed costs and $12 profit per order, you need 41.7 orders a month to break even, which rounds up to 42, or about 1.4 orders a day and $1,890 of revenue at a $45 average order value. To make $1,000 a month you need (500 + 1,000) ÷ 12 = 125 orders, or $5,625 of revenue.

3. Who should use this tool?

  • Store owners deciding whether they can afford a new app, hire or agency.
  • Stores that are busy but unsure whether they are actually profitable.
  • Owners setting a monthly sales goal.
FAQ

Break-Even Orders Calculator: frequently asked questions

What counts as a fixed cost?

Costs that do not change with the number of orders, such as your Shopify plan, apps, software subscriptions, contractors and salaries. Ad spend is not fixed if you already included it in profit per order.

What if my profit per order is negative?

Then more orders will not help. Fix pricing, costs or ad efficiency first, using the Profit Margin Calculator.

Should I count my own pay?

Yes, if you want to know when the store can support you. Add the salary you want to fixed costs.

Does this account for seasonality?

No. It uses one monthly figure. If your sales swing through the year, run it for a slow month and a busy month.
