What does the Shopify Theme Detector do?
A Shopify theme detector reads the public code of a store’s homepage to find which theme it runs. Enter a store URL and this tool shows the theme name, the theme family and version where the store publishes it, and whether the theme comes from the Shopify Theme Store or is custom or unlisted.

2. How does the shopify theme detector work?
- We request the store’s public homepage, like a browser does.
- We look for the theme details Shopify places in the page code (the Shopify.theme object).
- We report the theme name, its schema name and version, and its Theme Store ID if it has one.
- Nothing is stored. Only the result is shown to you.
For a store on the Dawn theme, the result shows the theme name (often “Dawn”), the schema name “Dawn” with its version number, and a Theme Store ID. A store with a custom theme shows a custom name and no Theme Store ID.

How does a Shopify theme detector work?
Every Shopify store publishes some theme information in its page code. The detector reads that public information. It does not access any private data.
Why can it not find the theme for some stores?
A store may block automated requests, use a password page, hide the theme details or not run on Shopify at all.
What does “custom or unlisted theme” mean?
The theme is not listed in the Shopify Theme Store under an ID. It may be a heavily edited theme, a custom build or a theme bought elsewhere.
Is it legal to check what theme a store uses?
The information comes from the public page that every visitor’s browser receives. Copying another store’s content or design is a different matter, and you should always respect copyright.
