In short

What does the Ad Test Budget Planner do?

An ad test budget is the amount you are willing to spend on one product before you decide whether it works. This planner uses your break-even cost per sale, your cost per click and your expected conversion rate to show your likely cost per sale, the conversion rate you need to break even, and a sensible test budget per product and in total.

2. How is the ad test budget planner calculated?

  • Expected cost per sale = CPC ÷ conversion rate
  • Break-even conversion rate = CPC ÷ break-even CPA
  • Clicks per sale = 1 ÷ conversion rate
  • Test budget per product = break-even CPA × test multiple
  • Total test budget = test budget per product × number of products
Example

With a $21 break-even CPA, a $0.80 CPC and a 1.5% conversion rate, the expected cost per sale is $0.80 ÷ 0.015 = $53.33, which is more than 2.5 times your break-even. You would need a 3.81% conversion rate to break even. A 2.5× test budget is $52.50 per product, or $157.50 for 3 products.

3. Who should use this tool?

  • New advertisers who do not know when to stop spending on a product that is not selling.
  • Owners testing several products at once who need a total budget.
  • Anyone whose ads get clicks but no sales and wants to see if the numbers can ever work.
FAQ

Ad Test Budget Planner: frequently asked questions

How much should I spend testing a product?

A common rule of thumb is to spend around two to three times your break-even cost per sale before deciding, but it is a guide and not a law. Judge the product on more than one data point, such as add-to-cart rate and click-through rate.

What is a good conversion rate for Shopify?

Many stores convert between about 1% and 3% of visitors, but it varies by product, price and traffic source. The useful number is the conversion rate you need to break even, which this tool calculates.

What if the conversion rate I need is unrealistic?

Then the product, price or costs need to change before you spend on ads. Raise the price, lower costs, or improve the product page and offer.

Is this tool a guarantee?

No. It turns your assumptions into numbers. Real results depend on the product, creative, audience and market.
